A Michigan State Police patrol car was struck by a drunk driver on westbound Interstate 94 near Mt. Elliott on Christmas night, around 11:30 p.m., according to reports. Troopers were attending to an abandoned vehicle obstructing a lane when the collision occurred.
The 47-year-old driver of a Ford Fusion continued driving after hitting the patrol car's rear driver's side but was later apprehended by law enforcement. The driver was found to be impaired, "We were fortunate that the trooper was not struck by this suspect," MSP 1st. Lt. Mike Shaw said, emphasizing the dangers of driving under the influence and failing to heed Michigan's Move Over law, as per CBS News Detroit.
After the crash, the suspect's vehicle was located with "disabling damage" parked on the right shoulder further west down I-94. The trooper involved was outside their patrol car at the time of the incident, narrowly avoiding a potentially more serious encounter, as cited by WWJ Newsradio.
