The long-anticipated wait for the Wheels Roller Skating Rink at Merrick-Moore Park is nearing an end, with the finishing touches being applied to the facility. Anticipated to ignite a spark of retro joy in the area, the rink is proposed to roll out its grand opening in early 2025. According to an announcement made by the Durham Parks and Recreation department, the final approvals are the only thing standing between now and when United Skates of America, the rink's operator, begins outfitting the venue with everything needed for skaters to hit the floor.
Once those who have been eagerly completing the paperwork sign off on the final checks, a statement obtained by Durham Parks and Recreation, United Skates of America will commence a four-week process to prepare the rink. This preparation will involve the move-in and set-up of the rink's interior, making it ready for the wheels of Durham's avid skaters to take their inaugural spin around the space.
The rink represents a welcome addition to Merrick-Moore Park's offerings, boosting the community's recreational scene and providing a nostalgic throwback to the disco-dotted era of roller skating rinks — without the disco, perhaps, but certainly with the charm. Community anticipation has been high, and the venue is expected to cater to a range of ages and abilities, reaffirming the time-honored saying, "good things are worth the wait."
As Durham residents await a confirmed opening date, they can look forward to the array of activities that will soon be available post-opening. According to Durham Parks and Recreation, "We’ll be thrilled to announce a grand opening date and can’t wait to welcome the community to this exciting celebration!"
