The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of California has recently acknowledged the significant contributions of state, local, and federal law enforcement partners in making communities safer. As reported by the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced the honorees of the 2023 Eastern District of California Law Enforcement Awards, which celebrate the strong collaboration within the law enforcement community in tackling serious crimes in the Sacramento and Fresno divisions.
"Congratulations to all of our award recipients on being chosen and for their efforts to address dangerous crimes that threaten the residents of the Eastern District of California," said U.S. Attorney Talbert, praising the dedication and efforts of these professionals in a statement made available on the DOJ's website. These accolades shine a spotlight on individuals and agencies that demonstrate exceptional teamwork and commitment to jointly ensure public safety.
The Fresno Multi-Agency Gang Enforcement Consortium (MAGEC) earned an Outstanding Law Enforcement Agency Award for their successful investigations into gang activities, including arresting over 25 Norteño gang members and charging 10 MS-13 gang members for murder. The collaborative force made up of several local police departments and state-level agencies has been recognized as a key player in combating violent gang crime.
Meanwhile, the Sacramento Hi-Tech Crimes/Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force received similar honors for their vigilant pursuit of sexual offenders who target children, resulting in numerous successful charges and prosecutions. These results were made possible through the dedicated efforts of various law enforcement agencies within the region, as conveyed on the DOJ's website. Task forces like ICAC are crucial in protecting the vulnerable and ensuring that justice is served.
On an individual level, recognition was given to outstanding officers like Sixto Torres from the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office, who was instrumental in a DEA Task Force operation targeting a major drug trafficking organization. Similarly, Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Scott Schwamb, as part of the ICAC Task Force, led an investigation that put a predator behind bars for 21 years. Schwamb and Torres exhibit exemplary dedication and skill in their respective investigations, setting a gold standard in law enforcement. FBI Special Agent Jessi Groff and Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Jackie Lovato were also recipients of Outstanding Federal Agent awards in their respective divisions, for their integral work in high-stakes investigations.
