As the holiday season unfolds with its characteristic merriment, the Eden Prairie Police Department (EPPD) reminds us that not everyone is imbibing the spirit of the season in the same manner. Some seek to exploit the time of cheer for personal gain—through theft and burglary. The EPPD, in their latest blog posting, offers practical tips to deter potential thieves, often referred to colloquially as 'Grinches', from dampening the holidays.
According to the EPPD's recommendations, personal vigilance is paramount, especially during the heightened bustle of holiday shopping. Patrons are advised to guard against distraction and safeguard possessions such as purses, wallets, or phones, by keeping them close and not leaving them unattended in a shopping cart. The EPPD emphasized that items should be stored away from sight, such as in a trunk, upon leaving the store. "Never leave your purse, wallet or phone unattended in a shopping cart. Carry wallets and phones in your front pocket or a purse," stated the EPPD in their blog post.
For those who prefer the convenience of online shopping, the EPPD suggests delivery strategies to circumvent package theft. Options include shipping to a workplace or to an address where someone will always be present to secure the received parcels immediately. The increased risk of package theft during the holidays cannot be overstated, with more goods being delivered and left unattended, potentially tempting would-be thieves.
Those planning time away from their homes this season can also take preventative measures to give the impression of occupancy, a tactic that the EPPD suggests can be quite effective. Simple acts like setting timers on lights, halting mail and newspaper delivery, and having a neighbor tend to the driveway can create the semblance of an inhabited home. "If you’re headed out of town during the holidays be sure to use timers on lights, arrange for your mail and newspapers not to be delivered, and ask a neighbor to shovel your driveway or sidewalk," the EPPD's blog advised. Furthermore, maintaining the appearance of activity, like having a neighbor's car in the driveway, is recommended as an additional step to dissuade potential burglars.
In the midst of holiday preparations, the EPPD also encourages community vigilance. Any unusual behavior or suspicious activities observed should be reported to authorities immediately by calling 911.
