Two El Paso County men are facing drug charges after deputies reportedly caught them attempting to dispose of evidence during a traffic stop last week. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has identified Joseph Lunares and Edgar Martinez as the individuals detained in the incident last Thursday. The arrest took place along the 600 block of Westway Boulevard, where, according to the KTSM report, deputies witnessed objects being discarded from the suspects' vehicle before it came to a halt.
Upon retrieval, the thrown items were found to contain fentanyl, a powerful opioid that has been a significant contributor to the ongoing substance abuse crisis. KVIA detailed that the deputies later discovered and confiscated a considerable number of fentanyl-laced pills during their investigation following the traffic stop. This discovery further complicated the legal situation for Lunares and Martinez.
The charges levied against both men involve tampering with physical evidence and possession of a controlled substance within Penalty Group 1—charges that carry serious legal ramifications. According to KFOX-TV coverage, "Both Lunares and Martinez were arrested and charged with Tamper with Physical Evidence and Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1."
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has yet to release further details about the quantity of fentanyl seized or the possible wider implications of this case.
