Last week, Elk Grove Police Department officers responded to a situation that could have easily spiraled into tragedy. According to an Elk Grove Police Department Facebook post, several reports came in about a man walking down Laguna Boulevard near W. Stockton Boulevard, armed with what appeared to be a rifle and donning a bulletproof vest.
The officers arrived at the scene and managed to detain the man without incident, what could have been an explosive confrontation became a controlled de-escalation unfolding on the streets of Elk Grove. Upon closer examination, the officers discovered the man was not carrying real firearms but airsoft guns, which are designed to mimic the appearance and feel of real weapons closely but they are non-lethal, allowing the officers to take a step back from what could've been a fatal use-of-force scenario.
As the details of the encounter continued to unspool, it was revealed that the individual at the center of this call was experiencing a mental health crisis. "Further assessment revealed the man was experiencing a mental health crisis and had intended to provoke officers into using lethal force against him," reported by the Elk Grove Police Department's social media update.
