An 89-year-old Eustis woman tragically lost her life in a multi-vehicle incident on State Road 44 yesterday afternoon after a semi-truck trailer collided with her car, which then crashed into a passenger bus, as per reports from the Florida Highway Patrol.
The collision, around 1:47 p.m. near Forest Ridge Road, unfolded when a 58-year-old Miami man driving the semi-truck east on SR-44 failed to control his vehicle while attempting to slow down. His trailer swung into the westbound lane and struck the Nissan Sentra, according to WFTV.
The aftermath saw the Nissan redirect into the eastbound lane, clashing with an oncoming Ford E-450 passenger bus. The woman behind the wheel of the Nissan was airlifted to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
While the passenger bus driver sustained no injuries from the accident and remained at the scene, four of the twelve passengers aboard suffered minor injuries and received hospital treatment. The semi-truck driver continued eastbound after the incident, only to be stopped by troopers tracking his vehicle down near County Road 42, with damage "consistent with the collision," as reported by ClickOrlando.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash, and charges are pending against the semi-truck driver, who claimed he was unaware of his trailer's contact with the Nissan.
