Monroeville Mall faced a tumultuous afternoon on Sunday as reports of shots fired resulted in mass panic and a substantial police turnout. According to WPXI, the incident began with a 911 call about a confrontation between two individuals that spiraled into rumors of an active shooter on the premises. Chief Doug Cole of the Monroeville Police was quoted saying that initial calls indicated that one of the individuals might have been armed, but it was later thought the item could be a cell phone.
The response, which involved officers rushing through the crowded mall with guns drawn, led to widespread confusion and fear. At around 3 p.m., the mall went into lockdown, a precaution that lasted until 4 p.m. The disruptive incident, which occurred among holiday shoppers just days before Christmas, was recorded by multiple cell phone videos showing shoppers fleeing in panic.
Despite the situation's intensity, the lockdown was lifted, and the Monroeville Police Department provided reassurance via an alert to shoppers. Police confirmed "the lockdown is over" and encouraged people to "resume normal operations." In a statement reported by WTAE, Chief Cole explained that the evolving information ultimately suggested that no active shooting had occurred within the mall.
