The remnants of the Duthler's grocery store on Grand Rapids' West Side are now cleared away, as demolition crews worked this week to pave the way for a new apartment complex. The former family-owned grocery, which closed its doors in 2017, stood at the intersection of Bridge Street and Gold Avenue—a location that's been seeing rapid change and development in the neighborhood. A sore spot for nostalgia, the old store's demolition clears a path for a mixed-use residential future, according to a report by WOODTV.
The forthcoming Bridge Street Apartments, a project spearheaded by developer Ryan Talbot, will feature 148 units spread across five stories, with a roof deck, solar panels, and an on-site coffee shop that's open to the public as reported by FOX 17 and WZZM 13, on-site parking will be available, alongside a fitness center, dog wash, and the building will not use any gas as the roof will feature multiple solar panels thus upholding a commitment to sustainability.
As per WZZM 13, Talbot expressed the urgency of addressing the housing demands of the expanding Grand Rapids area, saying, "If you go all the way back to even 2008 when we had the financial crisis, we lost a lot of housing production capacity back then, and we've never really caught up. And so you know, the name of the game right now is to build as much as we can to try to help restore that supply and demand balance," emphasizing the project's role in gradually alleviating the housing crunch.
Aside from residential and commercial spaces, Bridge Street Apartments will boast unique amenities like a resident movie lounge and EV chargers while being distinctively all-electric. During the groundbreaking ceremony, which closely followed state funding approval, Talbot told WOODTV, "It’s a great day," conveying palpable enthusiasm for the development's potential to bolster local businesses and community life with its proximity to the bustling Bridge Street corridor here the project faced no derailment as demolition proceeded smoothly precincting a summer 2026 opening as a new staple in the growing tapestry of Grand Rapids.
