A tragic turn of events unfolded on Kunia Road near Kunia Drive in Central Oahu as a motorcyclist lost their life in a hit-and-run incident on Sunday morning. The Honolulu Police Department reported that the accident occurred just before 9 a.m. when a pickup truck collided with the motorcyclist while both were traveling southbound. The motorcycle was forced onto a grassy shoulder where it met its demise against a telephone pole. Hawaii News Now indicated that the driver of the pickup truck fled the scene without providing aid or information.
In the wake of the accident, officials from the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division affirmed that speed seems to be a key factor in this fatal encounter, yet it is currently unclear if drugs or alcohol also contributed. The deceased motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, as confirmed by KITV. No other injuries have been reported. This incident marks the 50th traffic fatality of the year, slightly down from the 54 fatalities recorded by the same time last year.
The authorities are pressing forward with their investigations and have issued an appeal to the public for any information regarding the hit-and-run. Witnesses or those with knowledge of the affair are encouraged to contact the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division at 808-723-3413. An impromptu closure of Kunia Road from Schofield Barracks’ Lyman Gate to Anonui Street was necessary to allow law enforcement professionals to safely conduct their investigation and clear the accident site, with roadways reopening around 12:15 p.m.
