FedEx has announced closures and layoffs at its Durham and Raleigh facilities, with WARN notices filed with North Carolina’s Department of Commerce. Operations will end at the Durham center, and job cuts will affect the Raleigh location, as reported by CBS17.
The downsizing initiative is set to eliminate a total of 341 jobs within the Triangle area, with the timeline for these layoffs targeting February 3, and while FedEx cites business needs as the rationale for this decision, saying, "... Decisions of this nature are the result of much thought and consideration for maintaining the high level of service expected from our customers and other needs of our business" there is nonetheless a palpable impact on the local workforce. According to a report from The News & Observer, FedEx is laying off 123 workers at its South Durham shipping center, which will close, and 218 workers at its Atlantic Avenue center in North Raleigh. The layoffs are part of a restructuring, with the deadline for job cuts approaching in a couple of months.
