Commuters breathe a sigh of relief as the Fillmore Street bridge maintenance project is set to finally wrap up this Friday, just in time for the holiday rush. Drivers have navigated narrowed lanes and detours for eight long months, but come December 20, all lanes on the bridge spanning east of Interstate 25, between Tremont Street and Sinton Road, will be open in both directions. The project, essential for travelers in the area, has focused on critical upkeep including deck repairs, waterproofing measures, and an asphalt overlay to ensure a smoother ride.
Despite the completion of recent maintenance, city planners are already looking to slowly phase out the current structures. It seems they have been deemed to be close to the end of their usefulness. In light of this, a more extensive overhaul is in the pipeline. The City has earmarked the bridges for eventual replacement, recognizing their significance in the local transport network and the need to preemptively address aging infrastructure. As cited by the City of Colorado Springs, these bridges, while still safe for public use, are regularly inspected and are nearing the end of their service life.
Financing for the upcoming project will hail from various sources. The Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority (PPRTA) A-list project designation sets it up to receive local financial support, while the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Bridge Investment Program (BIP) Planning Grant will pitch in at the federal level. This allocation of funds highlights the importance of the bridges not only to the local community but also to the broader regional economy.
