A Smith County woman faces serious charges after a thorough investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and local law enforcement. According to WKRN, 60-year-old Kitty Rena Smith, a former office manager at a Carthage business, allegedly misused her employer's credit card for personal expenditures, including travel and dining, over a span of eight years.
Details shared by WSMV reveal that the indictment came after a special request from Jason Lawson, the 15th Judicial District Attorney General, prompting TBI to collaborate with the Carthage Police Department in the investigation. Their joint investigation uncovered concerning evidence of long-term financial misconduct at the Carthage business where Smith was employed.
On Monday, a Smith County Grand Jury handed down an indictment, charging Smith with one count of theft over $250,000—an offense carrying a weighty implication given the sum involved. The following day, as noted by TBI Newsroom, Smith surrendered to authorities at the Smith County Jail and was released upon posting a $10,000 bond.
It is important to note that although Smith stands accused, the principle of innocence until proven guilty remains central to the American judicial process. The "charges and allegations referenced in this release are merely accusations of criminal conduct, not evidence," as reported by the TBI Newsroom.
