A former Houston high school teacher has been handed a nearly eight-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to child pornography charges, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas. Emilio Santiago De Los Santos, aged 35, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Lee H. Rosenthal for the distribution and possession of explicit materials involving minors.
The U.S. Attorney's Office press release issued on Wednesday details that De Los Santos will face a prison term totaling 97 months, followed by a decade of supervised release. During this period, stringent conditions are set to limit his interaction with children and internet access. De Los Santos has also been ordered to pay restitution to the victims and register as a sex offender. U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani highlighted the severity of the crime, stating, "At the same time, he was sharing his stash of child pornography with like-minded offenders and that’s what makes this crime especially abhorrent."
The investigation into De Los Santos's activities began when he was found sharing child pornography files in chatrooms on the Keybase application. A search warrant executed at his residence led to the seizure of his electronic devices. Forensic analysis uncovered 853 images and 380 videos, some depicting sexual abuse of infants and toddlers, as well as other disturbing content involving young children.
Special Agent in Charge Douglas Williams of the FBI’s Houston Field Office expressed his agency's commitment to prosecuting such offenses, "The FBI’s violent crimes against children squat consists of very special individuals who work every day to identify, investigate and arrest predators like De Los Santos." He celebrated the sentencing as a testament to their dedication to child protection. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sherin Daniel, as part of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative focused on tackling the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
