A former Hudson doctor has been convicted of rape and sexual battery by a Summit County jury, as declared by the Summit County Prosecutor's Office. Mahmud Kara, aged 58, was found guilty following allegations that he sexually assaulted a young woman in his home in April 2023. According to the WKYC report, the evening began with dinner and ended in an assault after the other guests had departed.
Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich highlighted the survivor's bravery, stating, "Sexual violence has no place in Summit County... I am impressed by the courage of a survivor and grateful for her ability to stand up and tell the truth about Mahmud Kara." He thanked the jury and the Hudson Police Department for their roles in the proceedings. Kolkovich's statement, as obtained by the Akron Beacon Journal, echoed a sentiment of zero tolerance towards sexual violence in the region.
The conviction comes after Kara's previous troubles with the law, having forfeited his medical license in 2018 due to felony charges related to improper prescription practices. As reported by Cleveland19, this was a result of an undercover investigation that brought his prescribing practices under scrutiny.
Kara now awaits sentencing, which is scheduled for February 6, 2025. He faces a potential prison term of 11 to 16.5 years and, upon release, would be required to register as a Tier III sex offender, necessitating registration with law enforcement every 90 days for the rest of his life. His bond has been revoked, and he remains in custody at the Summit County Jail.
