In what amounts to a collective sigh of relief for some residents, earlier park closure hours will soon be the norm throughout the city. Starting January 1, 2025, the Park & Recreation Department is set to align the operating hours of all city parks to 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., as reported by the City of Fort Worth yesterday. Breaking from the previous closing time of 11:30 p.m. for many parks, the change follows approvals from the City Council to amend Chapter 24 of the City Code.
These new rules carve out a unified policy that dispenses, with exceptions that allowed varying hours across 117 parks within the city's domain. The Trinity River Trail system, subjected to a 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. schedule under the Tarrant Regional Water District, already mirrors the upcoming citywide adjustment. However, city-dwellers with an appetite for midnight strolls will find solace in knowing that certain activities, including those covered by permits, amended sporting event times, and special occasions, will keep different hours.
Feedback from locals and neighborhood associations, pestered by security and noise concerns, has been a significant driver behind the shift. According to the same Fort Worth City news release, staff received "numerous calls" about the 11:30 p.m. closing time, especially from those living adjacent to neighborhood parks. The standardization of park hours appears to be a response to these community calls for consistency and enhanced nighttime tranquility.
