With the holiday season in full swing, the City of Fort Worth is reminding citizens of their options for disposing of Christmas trees, be they live or artificial. According to the City of Fort Worth, residents are encouraged to first consider repurposing or donating their festive trees and decorations to extend their lives and bring joy to others.
For those with live trees, the city states that they can be placed curbside for regular, weekly pickup as part of the yard waste collection, which ensures that they will be converted into mulch, thereby re-entering the life cycle, and for flocked trees, garland, and live boughs, the same process applies these must be less than eight feet long; cut them into two pieces, if necessary, and all decorations, including lights and tinsel, must be removed beforehand.
In a move to facilitate easier disposal, the city specifies that live trees should not be bagged and should be stripped of all decorations, lights, nails, and other items; the tree must also be removed from its stand before being set out for collection. In the case of artificial trees, these and any related decorations, such as wreaths or garlands, should go directly into the brown garbage cart for disposal.
Residents looking for alternate disposal methods can turn to the city's four Drop-Off Station locations, open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., though they will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, here residents can bring their live or artificial Christmas trees, old or broken decorations, as well as excess garbage, recycling, yard waste, or bulky waste.
