Last Thursday, a group of bright-eyed young innovators celebrated a significant milestone in DeSoto, as they graduated from Ruby Young’s Drone Academy. The local police department's very own Corporal Montemayor was in attendance to cheer on the students alongside DeSoto ISD administrators. The DeSoto Police Department highlighted on social media that the partnership with the district fostered an enriching environment where children could delve into drone technology.
During the program, these young minds learned the ins and outs of drones, "exploring the world of drones together," as highlighted by the DeSoto Police Department's post. The academy provided a safe space indoors to handle sUAS (small unmanned aircraft system), enabling these students to complete various "fun drone missions". In the process, they not only grasped the mechanics of drone operation but also ignited a passion for fields closely associated with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
A nod of gratitude was given to DeSoto ISD and the administrators at Ruby Young Talented & Gifted Academy for collaborating in this innovative program. Their efforts have clearly gone a long way in cultivating fresh interest in STEM among the youth, which holds significant implications for their educational and career trajectories. This hands-on experience with emerging technologies is pivotal as it lays down the groundwork for skill development in an increasingly tech-driven world.
