The Gahanna Division of Police has made public the body camera footage from a fatal shooting incident, which took place this past Thursday on Taylor Road, near an assisted senior living facility and a Springhill Suites hotel. According to The Columbus Dispatch, the footage captures the response of four police officers to a report of a guest using a fraudulent credit card at the hotel.

The body camera video shows police arriving at the first-floor room of the suspect, a man in his early 20s, yet to be identified by authorities. They proceeded to engage with him through the door and were soon led on a chase when he fled out a window into a parking lot and across Taylor Road, said Gahanna Chief of Police Jeff Spence in a statement obtained by WBNS. Despite multiple attempts to de-escalate, the video depicts an increasingly tense situation as the officers follow the armed man, continually demanding him to lay down his firearm.

It escalated when the man, after several commands to disarm, pointed his gun at the officers, and this act was met with gunfire from multiple officers at the scene. The individual was transported to a hospital, where he was declared dead at 10:31 a.m., ABC6 reports. Before the lethal response, a nonlethal round had been unsuccessfully deployed by one officer to disarm the man.

The officers involved in the shooting incident have since been placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure in such cases. At the same time, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation carries out an investigation. While the footage provides some insight, many details remain under examination as the investigation continues. Officers rendered aid as soon as it was safe to do so after the man was shot.
