Keith Allen Courtney, a 53-year-old resident of Gainesville, has been handed a federal prison sentence for conspiring to illegally receive Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB). U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday sentenced Courtney to 13 months behind bars and ordered him to forfeit $71,208, which represents the amount of DIB he wrongly collected, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.

Details from court documents reveal that Courtney engaged in fraudulent activity from February 2016 to May 2020. He was accused of hiding his employment status to qualify for disability benefits he wasn't entitled to receive. His deception led the Social Security Administration (SSA) to erroneously approve his application and disburse monthly benefits. "Based on the false and incomplete information provided by Courtney, SSA approved his application for DIB and issued monthly benefit payments on his behalf," as per the aforementioned press release.

The investigation conducted by the Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General brought the scheme to light, leading to Courtney's prosecution by Special Assistant United States Attorney Suzanne Huyler. Courtney's plea of guilty to the charge of conspiracy was entered on April 12, 2024, which ultimately culminated in the recent sentencing.

This sentence serves as a reminder of the persistent efforts of federal agencies to uncover and prosecute fraud against government programs. The enforcement actions taken against individuals like Courtney underscore an ongoing commitment to safeguard taxpayer resources and ensure assistance reaches those genuinely in need.
