Big changes are coming to the stretch of I-20 near Conyers and Rockdale County, with construction crews breaking ground on a significant reconstruction and widening project. According to a recent announcement from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the endeavor aims to alleviate the snarl of traffic that often plagues this corridor of interstate.
At the core of the project is the overhaul of the current Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) at I-20 and SR 138/SR 20. It will be transformed into an eight-lane bridge, widening from its existing six. The plans include dual left turn lanes for both directions and the addition of pedestrian sidewalks. Commuters and pedestrians alike can look forward to improved flow and safety once the project reaches completion.
In addition to the bridge work, the initiative will create a direct access route to I-20 westbound from Dogwood Drive, complemented by a mini-roundabout where Dogwood intersects with the western entrance of Conyers Plaza. The GDOT is investing $83.6 million into this project, a clear indication of their commitment to transportation infrastructure in the region.
The effort to manage the constant hum of traffic and foster smoother commutes is set for completion in summer 2028. While residents might face some short-term construction-related inconveniences, the long-term payoff should prove beneficial in terms of reduced congestion and enhanced safety.
