Sen. Chuck Payne and other Georgia leaders visited the southern border to meet with National Guard troops. The delegation included Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, House Speaker Jon Burns, and Rep. Chas Cannon.
According to the Georgia State Senate Press Office release, the trip aimed to thank Georgia National Guard troops for their dedication to security during the holiday season. Sen. Payne, Chairman of the Senate Veterans, Military, and Homeland Security Committee, shared his experience of being away from loved ones during the holidays, saying, "it was a truly special experience to meet with the men and women who dedicate their lives to safeguarding our freedoms. As someone who has experienced being away from family during the holidays during my own service in the Army, I understand the challenges these brave individuals face. Their willingness to be away from home during Christmas is a testament to their dedication to the 336 million Americans whose freedoms they protect."
Joined by House Veterans Committee Chairman Josh Bonner, who serves in the Georgia National Guard and is also deployed in Texas, the leaders met with the service members in person. Gov. Kemp's initiative to arrange such a visit signals the state's acknowledgment of its deployed citizens and their ongoing efforts at the border.
As the new year nears, it reflects ongoing discussions about the National Guard's role at the border and the challenges of balancing national and state interests.
