Senator Greg Dolezal of Georgia has openly praised the University System of Georgia (USG) for their move to strip Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) requirements from the university admissions and employee hiring processes. The decision by the USG Board of Regents marks a sizable shift in policy, doing away with mandatory DEI statements that previously needed to be affirmed by candidates seeking admission or employment within USG, as Senate Press reported.
"All admissions processes and decisions shall be free of ideological tests, affirmations, and oaths, including diversity statements no applicant for admission shall be asked to or required to affirmatively ascribe to or opine about political beliefs, affiliations, ideals, or principles, as a condition for admission," the proposed revision echoes the concerns raised by Dolezal about ideological impositions in an academic setting. Sen. Dolezal, who introduced Senate Bill 261 last year with the aim to oust what he terms "political litmus tests" from higher education, applauded the board's recommendation as a measure to prioritize qualifications and merit, according to a statement from Senate Press.
Dolezal vocalized his belief that requiring diversity statements could lead to a forced allegiance to a particular ideology, potentially infringing upon principles of equal opportunity and impeding the embrace of diverse intellectual perspectives. The senator's statement highlighted his view that such practices could suppress intellectual diversity, which he esteems as pivotal for academic success.
Backing the measure, Sen. Dolezal said, "USG’s decision to eliminate mandatory DEI statements from admissions and hiring processes is a victory for fairness and common sense," and expressed his appreciation towards Chancellor Sonny Perdue and the Board of Regents for taking robust action against what he considers a compelling issue affirming that by this action, USG is leading with a powerful example of neutrality and accountability in academia, this according to what Senate Press details
