A Goldsboro community is grappling with tragedy following a fatal shooting in a residential neighborhood over the weekend. Goldsboro Police Department officers were dispatched to a home in the 400 block of E. Walnut Street last night, responding to a call about an "unknown disturbance" at 10:19 p.m., as reported by CBS17.
There was corroborating technology in play; a ShotSpotter alert — a gunfire detection system — was triggered in the vicinity almost concurrently, signaling multiple gunshots. Upon their arrival, police officers discovered a man with multiple gunshot wounds in the backyard of the property. The man, 31-year-old Larry Maurice Saunders Jr., of Goldsboro, was pronounced dead at 10:48 p.m. WRAL News confirms the details and timeline of the incident.
The initial notification to the authorities came without specificity, indicating no thoroughfare for immediate action; "the caller did not provide details," a statement according to the Goldsboro police acquired by CBS17. An ongoing investigation has been launched to unravel the circumstances that led to Saunders's untimely death.
Community members are urged to come forward with any relevant information, as the case remains open. "Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call or text Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255 or submit a TIP at p3tips.com," requests a public plea for assistance by the local police, a notion echoed by WITN.
