Gov. Brian P. Kemp has announced the first grant recipients of the OneGeorgia Authority's Rural Site Development Initiative. The grants, totaling $9.3 million, aim to bolster Georgia's economic growth by funding the development of new industrial sites in rural communities. This initiative underscores the state's commitment to maintaining its competitive edge and economic sustainability through strategic investments in infrastructure readiness, according to the official press release.
Detailing the significance of the initiative, Governor Kemp stated, "Georgia has been the No. 1 state for business for over a decade by investing in our future." Citing key elements that companies seek, he highlighted workforce and site readiness as the top priorities—one of which the initiative directly addresses. “When we talk to companies, the first question they ask is if we have the workforce. The second is if we have the sites. The Rural Site Development Initiative is just one of the ways we’re making sure Georgia remains in pole position for economic development for years to come.” Kemp said, as noted by the state's announcement.
The awarded grants will cover a range of essential developments including land grading, access roads, and utilities such as water and sewer systems critical for these rural areas. Recipients such as the Dade Industrial Development Authority and the Liberty County Development Authority were among the six entities that proved strong community support in their respective proposals.
Commissioner Christopher Nunn of the Department of Community Affairs lauded the program's potential, "This new tool will enable communities to remain attractive for future prospects and achieve their vision of economic prosperity." Pat Wilson, Georgia Department of Economic Development Commissioner, also weighed in, adding, “There is no better way to change a life for the better than creating an opportunity for a job. This program will help us continue to bring economic opportunity and prosperity into our communities, providing generational change for the better,” further detailed in the same press release.
The initiative provides financial support while ensuring projects follow OneGeorgia Authority rules and state laws. Applicants, such as the Screven County Development Authority, show their commitment by using local funding, helping turn this state effort into meaningful community growth.
