On Thursday, a 66-year-old grandfather and his 15-year-old grandson were rescued after falling into the icy waters of Lake George in Oakland County while ice fishing. The quick actions of a nearby neighbor and first responders prevented a tragedy.
A grandfather from Livonia and his grandson from Ligonier fell through the ice while fishing. The grandson called 911 and tried to rescue his grandfather, but both were trapped in the freezing water. A local resident used a kayak to pull the grandson to safety and helped the grandfather stay afloat. Firefighters and paramedics rescued the grandfather, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition, while the grandson was treated and released, as reported by ABC12 and Audacy.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard praised a neighbor and emergency responders for preventing a tragedy after a grandfather and grandson fell through thin ice. Bouchard warned the public, saying, "There is no ice that could be considered safe at this time," due to fluctuating temperatures. Neither were wearing life jackets, and alcohol was not a factor.
