In Griffin, residents of the Ava Park Apartments, reliant on Section 8 housing, are facing forced relocation once again. As reported by FOX 5, they are being displaced from a motel that had served as a temporary home just before Christmas, leaving them to spend the holidays in shelters.
These situations are part of a larger issue of housing insecurity during the holidays. Jerome Campbell, an advocate and homeless himself, works to support others facing similar challenges. "I'm homeless myself. I've come out here to help my brothers and sisters," Campbell told 11Alive.
The situation at the Baymont motel, as experienced by Carol Bishop, highlights the disruption of holiday traditions. "We didn’t ask to come here…we would rather be at our own home fixing our own dinners with our own families celebrating," Bishop lamented to FOX 5. Across the street, another motel serves as a temporary home, where the inability to cook a Christmas dinner is a difficult loss for many.
The Atlanta Downtown Improvement District's supportive services team works to ease the challenges faced by the city's unhoused population. Nakasha Shoyinka, a team member, highlighted the importance of connection and reunification in recovery. "That could be your sister, brother, uncle, or aunt," Shoyinka told 11Alive, noting how unforeseen events can easily lead to homelessness. Efforts like rehoming and the provision of essentials by organizations such as Camp Blake Cares are important, but the road to a solution remains long.
As the city braces for potentially higher numbers in need due to rising living costs, solutions like Invest Atlanta's approval of $75 million in bonds for the Homeless Opportunity Project become even more critical. This initiative, bolstered by an additional $10 million from the city's affordable housing trust fund, marks a concerted effort to build more housing for the homeles.
