Gwinnett County's District 3 Commissioner Jasper Watkins III has received a nod of excellence for his efforts in public health, clinching the 2024 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and Association of Black Health System Pharmacists (ABHP) Joint Leadership Award for his standout role in enhancing health-system pharmacy practice and improving public health, with a focus on marginalized groups. In a year marked by public health challenges, Commissioner Watkins' commitment has remained strong, as evidenced by the honor bestowed upon him.
With over thirty years of experience in pharmacy under his belt, Watkins earned this distinction for his work promoting health equity and diversity within the health care workforce, and his continual push for accessibility to quality health care services for all communities, not forgetting the historically underserved who have often found themselves on the margins of health prosperity. "Receiving the 2024 ASHP and ABHP Joint Leadership Award is both a humbling and motivating experience," Watkins said, according to a Gwinnett County press release, adding that it "reaffirms my commitment to ensuring that all communities — especially those that have historically been underserved — have access to the health care resources they need to thrive."
During his tenure on the Board of Commissioners, Watkins' advocacy has been shaped by a resolve for public service and a vision for equitable health solutions; he rallied for broadened access to COVID-19 vaccinations by setting up mass vaccination sites in the southern parts of Gwinnett and has been proactive in expanding innovative mental health services, which includes the burgeoning OneStop 4 Help centers aimed at providing community-based support. His voice has not dimmed in calling for better health care services for veterans in Gwinnett, contributing to a legacy that intertwines public service with health care innovation.
The award, presented at the ASHP Awards Luncheon in New Orleans on Tuesday, recognizes Commissioner Watkins' focus on health care access, preventive care, and addressing social factors affecting health. This honor highlights his role as a leader in healthcare and public service, with influence extending beyond his official duties. Watkins has emphasized equity, inclusion, and the well-being of all citizens, showing leadership that goes beyond traditional public office and working to change how health access is viewed and achieved in his community.
