Gwinnett County's roads and community spaces are set for an overhaul with the Board of Commissioners signing off on multiple initiatives to infuse new life into the area's infrastructure and urban design. Last Tuesday, the board sanctioned a range of projects, including a substantial grant application for road resurfacing and the construction of a new traffic roundabout, alongside an important amendment aimed at reviving the Civic Center Overlay District, as reported by Gwinnett County.
In pursuit of smoother journeys for its residents, the board endorsed a motion to apply for a Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant from the Georgia Department of Transportation. Poised to refresh various collectors and arterials, the grant will benefit from GDOT's pledge of $7.8 million, complemented by the County's match of $2.3 million, the funding 77% and 23% by the 2023 SPLOST, respectively, as detailed by the county's news release.
Meanwhile, the intersection of Lakeview Road, Pharrs Road, and Hillside Drive is slated to abandon its current three-way stop arrangement in exchange for a roundabout, promising enhanced safety and traffic flow. The contract, secured by CMC, Inc. for $2.6 million, allocates 82% of the financial load to the 2023 SPLOST, underpinning the community's commitment to revamping their thoroughfares functional.
The board has approved changes to the Civic Center Overlay District, creating a plan for the Gas South District to become a more walkable and dynamic area. The amendment includes a faster permitting process, new land use rules, updated design standards, and guidelines for mixed-use development. These changes are based on feedback from public hearings held in July and August, aiming to align the district with modern urban development trends.
