After substantial reconstruction and development, H-E-B celebrated the grand reopening of its historic South Congress Avenue grocery store on December 4. A fixture in the Austin community since its inception in 1957, the store holds the title of H-E-B's longest-standing location within the city.
As reported by FOX 7 Austin, more than 600 individuals queued up early Wednesday morning to witness the unveiling of the remodeled establishment, some having arrived as early as the night before. The eagerly anticipated reopening marked the end of a three-year construction period which saw the beloved local store transformed into a state-of-the-art, 145,000-square-foot, multi-level facility equipped with a host of new amenities and services.
A key emphasis of the redesign was expanding the store's capacity to better service its diverse customer base. "This location has been here for about 75 years. And then we tore this one down because it had just gotten to a point where we really needed to upgrade the facility and then serve this customer for as long as we did. We knew it was time to offer them kind of the newest, best, brightest thing that we had, which is what you're going to see today," Joey Uker, General Manager of the South Congress location, told FOX 7 Austin.
Patrons of the newly revamped store can expect an array of features aimed at enhancing the shopping experience. According to a Community Impact article, amenities include a True Texas BBQ restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating, an expansive beer and wine selection, convenient curbside and home delivery options, and a H-E-B Meal Simple section for chef-inspired prepared meals, among others.
The aesthetic appeal of the store was not overlooked in its redesign. H-E-B has included local artwork to celebrate the store's longstanding roots in South Congress. A particularly notable piece is the heart-shaped H-E-B sign, repurposed from the old store's outdoor pylon sign, which Cathy Harm, H-E-B Regional Vice President in Central Texas, described as "a tribute to our incredible teams of partners who have served this community in the past, and now in the future," Community Impact stated.
