A high-speed chase terrorized Los Angeles streets and freeways Tuesday night as a stolen vehicle was pushed to harrowing speeds by two young suspects, authorities said. The episode, which was caught on camera by news helicopters from multiple local media outlets, featured dramatic and erratic maneuvers that endangered citizens until concluding in Santa Monica with the apprehension of the teenage suspects.
According to ABC7, the pursuit began when Los Angeles police started trailing the stolen vehicle; the driver, later identified as a 14-year-old, maneuvered the car through dense traffic on the westbound 10 Freeway and managed to cover the distance from downtown L.A. to Santa Monica in mere minutes, during the chase speeds clocked at over 120 mph were recorded and the suspect collided with another vehicle near 34th Street and Pico Boulevard. The pursuit carried on until the teens abandoned their sedan in a parking lot, the suspects tried to run but were quickly detained by the LAPD, and it was then revealed the passenger was aged 17.
The FOX LA report detailed how the dark gray Inifiniti sedan led officers on a high-speed chase, even breaking 140 mph at one point on the 10 Freeway before being ditched outside a Santa Monica 24 Hour Fitness gym. However, the article made no mention if the hastily parked car caused disturbances at the gym location.
Additional specifics were provided by CBS Los Angeles, which stated the pursuit started near downtown L.A. where the suspects nearly hit pedestrians with the stolen Infiniti while darting through traffic they, then, merged onto the freeway that led them towards Santa Monica; finally, the two were apprehended in a parking lot near Donald Douglas Loop and 31st Street, close to the Santa Monica Airport, concluding a dangerous episode that could have resulted in more seriously dire outcomes.
Neither of the sources disclosed any injuries among the public due to the chase, and outside of the felonious conduct associated with the stolen vehicle and the perilous pursuit, police have not connected these individuals to any additional criminal activities.
