Hillsboro's plans to construct new multi-use sports fields at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex have been scrapped. Originally intended to be located in the complex's northwest corner, the proposal met an impasse with the Bonneville Power Administration's (BPA) concerns about its proximity to future high-voltage powerlines. The BPA deemed the risk and safety concerns too great to proceed.
The sports fields, initially considered feasible in June when the lease for the Hillsboro Hops Ballpark was agreed upon, were hoped to address some of the commitments made then. Unfortunately, BPA threw a curveball in November, firmly stating that the previously proposed site could not accommodate a project of the proposed size without interfering with the planned transmission lines. To pivot quickly, the City now looks to identify alternative ways to deliver community value.
Despite this setback, the City of Hillsboro remains dedicated to fulfilling the recreational needs of its residents. As reported by the City of Hillsboro, several alternative solutions are being considered. These include potential smaller developments at the site, repurposing other under-utilized areas, or enhancing existing athletic fields with new amenities.
Financially, the quest to find a replacement for the lost recreational space won't fall on taxpayers but will instead be funded by $20 million amassed from a portion of ticket sales at Hillsboro Hops games. This funding strategy was part of the original lease agreement negotiations. As the city regroups to examine previously listed options in the Loss of Use Report, it plans to actively work alongside the Parks & Recreation Commission, the City Council, and the community to draft a revised game plan quickly and effectively.
