One year has lapsed, yet the call for justice in the unresolved murder of 68-year-old Albert Harry Pacheco Sr. echoes with renewed urgency through the community of Hilo. Detectives from the Hawai'i Island Police Department are revisiting the case, appealing to the public for any insight that may lead to closure for Pacheco's loved ones and the apprehension of his killer.
As initially reported, Pacheco was found dead with a gunshot wound to his upper thigh, sitting in a vehicle on a Hilo banana farm where he worked, in early December of last year. The autopsy confirmed the cause of death as homicide, and the case is now being treated as second-degree murder, as reported by the Hawai'i Island Police Department.
Investigators have interviewed many people, including farmworkers, neighbors, and Pacheco's family and friends. Despite these efforts, they still haven't found a clear motive or a suspect. The Hawai'i Island Police Department are urging anyone with information to come forward and help fill in the missing pieces of Pacheco's story, which ended suddenly that December afternoon.
In a statement obtained by the Hawai'i Island Police Department, Detective Christopher Jelsma, of the Area I Criminal Investigation Section, urges the community's aid, stating, "Police ask anyone who may have information relative to this case to call." Contact can be carried through several channels: detective Jelsma's direct line (808) 961-2386 or his email [email protected], or by calling the department's non-emergency number at (808) 935-3311. Crime Stoppers avails an anonymous tip line at 961-8300, where informants are not only promised confidentiality but may also find themselves eligible for a reward up to $1,000.00 – a small price against the weightier cost of justice denied.
