With the 52nd Honolulu Marathon right around the corner, the city is bracing for a tidal wave of more than 35,000 eager participants. According to a report by Hawaii News Now, this year's registration marks an impressive 25% increase from last year, hinting at a potentially record-breaking event in terms of participants. The kickoff for the marathon's festivities, as reported by KHON2, began at the Honolulu Marathon Expo where running enthusiasts converged to start their marathon journey.
Dr. Jim Barahal, President and CEO of the Honolulu Marathon, told KHON2 about the allure of the event, stating, "It's Hawaii and I think it embodies the best of the aloha spirit. It's a challenging course, but it's beautiful scenery and a lot of people out there take on that challenge. For many, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience." Acknowledging the mental challenge of the marathon was Aiea runner Sydnie Sambueno, who in a statement brimming with enthusiastic preparation, "I kinda made this goal for myself and just said ‘You know what, I’ll do the marathon.' So, here we are. I think being able to say that I did a marathon and just be proud of myself for pushing 26.2 miles because not everyone can do that it’s definitely a mental thing so on that aspect of being able to say I did a marathon."
Runners will set off to conquer the 26.2-mile course this Sunday, starting early at 5 a.m. on Ala Moana Boulevard, with a fireworks display to mark the commencement. For those favoring a shorter distance, the "Start to Park 10k" will launch simultaneously. In-person sign-up remains available at the Honolulu Marathon Expo for the procrastinators and the spontaneous, despite online registration having closed its doors, as reported by Hawaii News Now.
However, the influx of participants will surely lead to inevitable road closures, with one or more lanes being shut or coned off starting 12:30 a.m. until the passage of the athletes. A list of detailed road closures can be found by those looking to navigate the chaos on the race day. Drivers, take note: prepare for detours and expect potential delays. For bus riders whose routes may be affected, visit the Oahu Transit Services website, or call TheBUS for up-to-date information, as per Hawaii News Now.
To absorb the event's spirit and energy right from the comfort of your couch, a livestream of the marathon will be hosted, ensuring no one misses out on cheering on friends, family, or favorite runners. In the end, one thing remains clear: Honolulu is about to be swept up in marathon fever, and whether pounding the pavement or tracking from afar, the city's heart beats in sync with the runners' strides.
