As the embers of Fire Prevention Month cool, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal teamed up with Camp I Am Me by Illinois Fire Safety Alliance and the Illinois Community Risk Reduction Taskforce, culminating in a statewide blitz during the week of October 20th, where firefighters and volunteers distributed over 5,000 smoke alarms across the state. Their efforts aimed to combat the grim statistic that nearly three-fifths of home fire deaths occur in residences lacking working smoke alarms.
Illinois State Fire Marshal James A. Rivera emphasized the urgency of the initiative, highlighting that "fires burn hotter and faster due to synthetic construction materials in modern construction reducing escape times to less than 3 minutes," according to a statement obtained by the official Illinois state website. With the blitz, 71 fire departments engaged with communities to install smoke alarms and educate on fire safety; however, despite the success of the program since its inception in 2018 with 35,000 alarms installed statewide, there remains a critical need to continue these life-saving efforts.
Philip Zaleski, the Executive Director of Camp I Am Me, extolled the merits of the "Be Alarmed! Smoke Alarm Installation Program," which, beyond the installations, imparts essential fire escape planning and fire prevention education to Illinoisans. He told the official Illinois state website that an additional 10 fire departments joined the program during the blitz, a sign of growing commitment to safeguarding residents across Illinois.
Locally, the Buffalo Grove Fire Department, led by Fire Chief Larry Kane, stood out by fitting 600 smoke alarms with the aid of Buffalo Grove CERT Volunteers, Kane asserted that firefighters in Buffalo Grove are steadfast in their mission to shield the community with functioning smoke alarms while ensuring residents are well-versed in creating an inclusive fire escape plan, a sentiment echoed in an official Illinois state website interview. The blitz stats reported as of November 6 reveal that 5,232 smoke alarms were distributed, over 2,300 installed, and roughly 1,700 residents, including 989 considered high-risk, now dwell in homes protected by the alarms.
The combined efforts of the OSFM, Camp I Am Me, and the State of Illinois CRR Taskforce have already laid the groundwork for another statewide smack alarm blitz slated for October 19-25, 2025, with hopes to build upon the impact made this year and ensure more homes and lives are shielded from fire's grasp. Details of the initiative can be found at the official Illinois state website.
