Allegheny County dispatch confirmed that a collision on the outbound side of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel disrupted traffic and required an emergency response yesterday afternoon. TRIBLIVE reported that the incident occurred around 1:50 p.m., leading to a temporary road closure as crews attended the scene.
Subsequently, one individual was transported to a hospital, suffering from injuries to the extent of which authorities have yet to share publicly. The crash led to a significant backup of vehicles, as Pittsburgh's Action News 4 witnessed an ambulance departing the scene and the immobilized traffic that formed in the wake of the disruption, according to a statement cited by WTAE.
There has been no official communication regarding the causative factors of the collision or whether additional commuters sustained injuries during the event. Progress was made, however, as one of the entangled vehicles was cleared by 3 p.m., facilitating the tunnel's reopening and restoring the regular traffic flow.
