A fatal incident occurred at California State Prison, Sacramento, yesterday evening when inmate Lamar Scott was attacked and killed by fellow inmate Jason Brannigan, using what authorities have reported was an improvised weapon. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed the altercation that took place just after 6 p.m., revealing that officers witnessed Brannigan inflict multiple stab wounds on Scott.
Immediately following the attack, another inmate, Santana D. West, sustained injuries at the hands of the assailant. It remains unclear from the reporting how West was implicated in the violence, but according to ABC10, prison authorities intervened to halt Brannigan's attack and administered life-saving measures until paramedics arrived. Despite their efforts, Lamar Scott was pronounced dead by 6:36 p.m.
CBS News reported that Lamar Scott, 35, had been incarcerated since July 12, 2018, serving a 16-year sentence for corporal injury and domestic violence convictions. His attacker, 47-year-old Jason Brannigan, had been behind bars since 2011 on a 17-year sentence for injury to a spouse and other convictions, including for the possession or manufacture of a deadly weapon while already incarcerated.
In the aftermath of the incident, Brannigan was placed in restricted housing as the investigation into Scott's death continues. The CDCR has not released any further details on the motive or circumstances surrounding the altercation. Santana D. West, who was attacked as well, was treated for his injuries; authorities have not disclosed the extent of his injuries but managed by prison staff to make a recovery. CSP-SAC currently houses over 2,200 inmates across various security levels.
