A man is now fighting for his life in a Jacksonville hospital after what law enforcement has described as a targeted ambush. The incident took place yesterday afternoon in the Woodland Acres neighborhood, according to authorities.
Victim, a man in his early twenties, was departing from Oak Hammock Apartments on Acme Street when, at approximately 2:15 p.m., he was suddenly struck by gunfire. He sustained multiple wounds after being shot in the neck, side, and leg, as reported by Action News Jax. Police say, the attackers then made their getaway in a black SUV, fleeing the scene and leaving behind a spray of at least 44 shell casings as indicated by News4Jax.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded to the shooting, which took place in the 500 block of Acme Street. They issued a be-on-the-lookout alert for the suspects' vehicle. Later, law enforcement officials detained three individuals in connection with the shooting, as documented by First Coast News. However, it remains unclear if the victim was acquainted with the shooters, though the sheriff's office asserts that he was clearly the intended target of this assault.
While the motive is still under investigation, authorities believe that the violence was gang-related. The relationship between the suspects and the victim, however, is still unknown according to Action News Jax coverage.
