A man in his 50s was found unresponsive in his vehicle in the parking lot of Magnolia Terrace Apartments and later pronounced dead, a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office representative confirmed to News4Jax. The incident, which occurred on Jammes Road in the Hyde Park neighborhood yesterday afternoon, may have been the result of a medical emergency as noted by authorities due to the superficial damage to the vehicles involved.
JSO Sgt. Robert Hungerford, in a statement obtained by First Coast News, mentioned that the man's vehicle was still running when he was found and had collided with another parked vehicle at a "very low speed", suggesting the likelihood of a medical condition being a contributing factor the crash itself did not have the severity that typically results in a traffic fatality, this detail indicating that the passing of the man behind the wheel may have been rooted in an unforeseen health crisis, not the collision.
Rescue services attempted to provide medical aid on scene and during transport to a local hospital; however, the man did not survive, as reported by several Jacksonville-area news outlets. This event marks the 160th traffic fatality in Duval County for the year, a figure slightly lower than 2023's total of 175, according to the same News4Jax report.
As traffic fatalities are a continuous concern, JSO credits its enforcement strategies for the decrease in such incidents this year, affirming the community's need to maintain vigilance on the road especially with the year drawing to a close, prevention remains a key concern as they look forward to reducing the number of such fatalities further the aforementioned News4Jax article highlighted the department's ongoing efforts to enhance road safety. The Medical Examiner's Office is expected to provide an official cause of death after a full investigation, WOKV adds.
