Travelers who frequent the John Glenn Columbus International Airport will soon encounter changes in their parking options. As reported by WBNS, the Blue Shuttle Lot will close for incoming parkers on December 9. This measure is part of the preparations for a new, notable $2 billion terminal construction project.
The closure of this lot, as stated by the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, paves the way for what is set to be a significant advancement in the airport's infrastructure. The upcoming disruption is cushioned by the simultaneous introduction of a 2,550-car expansion in the Red Lot to accommodate the displaced parkers. Joseph Nardone, President & CEO of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, expressed enthusiasm for the progress, "This project represents a transformative investment in the future of CMH, and our team is energized by the momentum," according to a Columbus Underground citation.
Further adjustments are on the horizon, with a new temporary cellphone lot expected to open in early 2025. As detailed by The Columbus Dispatch, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new terminal is also slated for early that year. Despite the current terminal, which first opened in 1958, remaining operational, its demolition will follow once the new facility is inaugurated, aimed at 2029. The new terminal has plans to feature 36 gates, including one for more extensive international flights, and a capacity to manage 13 million passengers annually.
The envisioned terminal also includes a sizeable parking infrastructure, creating a 5,000-space garage linked by an elevated pedestrian bridge. In anticipation of the eventual transition, the airport's communication reflects a commitment to minimizing the inconvenience this major construction project might present to travelers.
