Mayor Muriel Bowser, along with the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), has just invited residents to the upcoming 11th Annual FITDC Fresh Start 5K. Scheduled for the first day of the new year, this event has become a staple in the DC community, intended to encourage residents to take strides towards better health and togetherness.
The race, as announced, will start at 11 am on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at Anacostia Park. Emphasizing the importance of the occasion, Mayor Bowser stated, "Every new year brings an opportunity for a fresh start, and the Fresh Start 5K has become a proud DC tradition that inspires all of us to prioritize health, wellness, and community." Bowser continues, "On January 1, 2025, let’s come together to celebrate new beginnings, set positive intentions, and start the year strong—one step at a time. See you at the starting line!" per the DC.gov official release.
This family-friendly event promises to be inclusive, inviting participants of all ages and abilities to join. The Fresh Start 5K is sponsored by Aetna and will feature not just the run but also a Kids' Dash and a range of festivities that include live music, refreshments, and various vendors. Interested participants can register online, and those who do so will be rewarded with a special commemorative T-shirt, a timed runner's bib, and a medal while supplies last.
The organizers have arranged for early packet pick-up to assist participants with a smoother race day experience. Individuals can collect their gear on Thursday, December 26, and Friday, December 27, from 10 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 7 pm. Locations for pick-up include spots such as the Columbia Heights Community Center and Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, among others. For those who prefer to wait until the event day, same-day registration will commence at 9 am, followed by the Kids Dash at 10:15 am, culminating with the 5K at the scheduled 11 am start time.
