The Arizona judiciary is seeing a new leader at its helms with the appointment of Judge Pamela S. Gates as the Presiding Judge for the Superior Court in Maricopa County beginning July 1, 2025. Announced by the Arizona Supreme Court, Judge Gates currently serves as the Associate Presiding Judge for the court. She also has a history of various leadership roles including as Presiding Civil Judge, Associate Criminal Presiding Judge, and Associate Presiding Judge for the downtown family court, according to a recent press release.
In her previous tenure, Judge Gates has managed to cultivate a wide expanse of experience both on the bench and in private practice, before her initial appointment in 2009. She was a partner at Bryan Cave, specifically involved in complex civil litigation with a strong focus on environmental litigation. Her academic credentials are equally notable, having graduated cum laude from Drake University and earned her J.D. with distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law.
In a statement about her appointment, Judge Gates emphasized her commitment to upholding fairness, "I am honored by the Supreme Court's decision to appoint me as the Presiding Judge of the Superior Court in Maricopa County. I look forward to continuing our commitment to providing the community a court system that ensures fairness and access to justice for all," Gates said, vowing to work collaboratively with colleagues for the fortification of the court system as a symbol of justice and the Rule of Law.
As Presiding Judge, Gates will hold considerable administrative sway over the county courts. She will be responsible for a broad range of oversight functions, such as managing court calendars, financials, and case assignments, as well as helping the court set strategic agendas and assessing the processing times of cases to enhance judicial efficiency.
