Kalaheo Region Faces Extended Traffic Disruptions Amid Ongoing Waterline WorkSource: County of Kauai

The Department of Water and Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc. are continuing excavation and waterline work in the Kalaheo area, resulting in lane closures on Pu’uwai Road. These closures are expected to last through the end of the year, depending on weather conditions. Drivers and pedestrians are advised to follow the instructions of flaggers and posted signs for safety and navigation, according to the County of Kauai release.

The lane closures will primarily affect Pu’uwai Road, particularly between Po’ohiwi Road and Kikala Road, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. The northern section of Pu’uwai Road near Pu’ulima Road will also be impacted during these hours. Motorists should expect delays and be cautious of flaggers directing traffic.

Additionally, a portion of Pu’uwai Road, from Pu’ulima Road to the road’s end, will be closed 24/7 for the duration of the construction. This segment will be off-limits to both vehicles and pedestrians.

However, Po’ohiwi Road will remain open to local residents during construction hours. The road will follow a timed access schedule, with closures and openings occurring at set intervals each hour. For example, the road will close at the top of the hour and reopen for ten minutes. From 12:30 p.m. to 1:20 p.m., the road will remain closed, then reopen briefly from 1:20 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

For more information or to address concerns, locals can contact Chansen Oshiro of HDCCI at 808-397-9627 or Scott Suga at the Department of Water at 808-245-5461.
