A semi-truck collision with a power pole led to an immediate power outage and road closures in a neighborhood of Kalamazoo last night. Roughly at 6 p.m., the truck struck the pole on North Park Street, between Bessie and Lulu streets, causing a power line to fall hazardously across the road, reported WOODTV. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) confirmed that the driver of the semi-truck fled the scene following the crash.
Authorities from KDPS quickly advised residents to avoid the affected area, anticipating an extended period for repair works to be conducted by Consumers Energy. In a situation that needed immediate attention to quickly restore normalcy, the power utility was expected to have "an extended delay" in repair, according to a statement obtained by FOX 17 News. Motorists were instructed to seek alternative routes with the repair efforts estimated to extend into early this morning.
While the ramifications of the crash notably included inconvenience to travelers, the loss of power posed a more pervasive disruption to the affected community. According to WWMT, the impact of the incident was immediate with outages reported in the vicinity. The KDPS maintained a presence at the site to offer assistance with traffic control while stressing the importance of avoiding the area until further notice.
