A traffic incident on Kūhiō Highway in Kapa‘a left a bicyclist in critical condition this past Wednesday. According to a press release from Kaua‘i County, at around 6:50 p.m., a 44-year-old male cyclist was hit by a 2008 Toyota sedan while crossing the highway in a designated crosswalk at the intersection with Kawaihau Road.
The victim was initially taken to Wilcox Medical Center before being airlifted to Queens Medical Center, where his condition remains critical. The involved driver, the operator of the Toyota sedan, was reported to have sustained no injuries from the collision. Following the accident, authorities closed Kūhiō Highway in both directions for about an hour and a half to facilitate an investigation by the Kauaʻi Police Department's Traffic Safety Section.
While the full circumstances of the crash are still being determined, early indications suggest that speed was not a contributing factor. Details regarding potential impairment, however, are not yet available as toxicology results are pending. The Kaua‘i Police Department urges anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward with information that might aid their ongoing investigation.
