With Christmas and New Year's Day right around the corner, Knoxville residents should take note of some important closures and service adjustments in the city. According to a recent announcement by the City of Knoxville, city offices will be shut down on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25 in observance of the Christmas holiday. They will remain closed for New Year's celebrations on Jan. 1, 2025.

The closures will include the 311/211 Center for Service Innovation, but residents can still make a 311 request anytime using the MyKnoxville smartphone app. The app also provides a comprehensive list of community resources and social services, ranging from food and housing assistance to mental health support. Nevertheless, during these holidays, the 911 emergency services will remain operational for those in urgent need.

The Knoxville Area Transit’s LIFT service will be operating on a limited Sunday schedule on Dec. 24, while the Knoxville Station Customer Service Counter will open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and all KAT services will be unavailable on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, 2025. Residents should also prepare for changes in waste collection services. No household garbage or recycling will be collected on Dec. 25, and the Waste Connections office will remain closed. Waste Connections’ staff confirmed through this schedule change that Wednesday routes will be collected on Thursday, Thursday on Friday, and Friday routes on Saturday, with regular services resuming on Monday, Dec. 30.

For those post-holiday clean-ups, the City assures residents that excess holiday trash and flattened cardboard left beside full garbage carts will be picked up between Dec. 26 and Jan. 3, 2025. While the City's five recycling centers stay open during the holidays, the Goodwill donation station at these centers will see limited staff on Dec. 24, and remain unstaffed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, the City urges residents not to leave household goods at these unattended centers during this time.
