LaFontaine Motors of Livonia, operating as LaFontaine Hyundai of Livonia, faced a stern action from the Michigan Department of State (MDOS) this week after being accused of leasing used vehicles misrepresented as new. The MDOS cited multiple violations of the Michigan Vehicle Code, leading to an initial suspension of the dealership's license. FOX 2 Detroit reported the state's concern for "imminent harm to the public," highlighting serious infractions such as falsifying documentation and improper odometer disclosure.
Under scrutiny, the dealership was quick to resume its operations after agreeing to a set of fines and penalties. These included a $25,000 financial penalty and a probationary period, as outlined by The Detroit News. The agreement also requires dealer training within 90 days and subjects the dealership to unannounced MDOS inspections. Reacting to the state's measures, a LaFontaine Automotive Group spokesperson contended that the closure was brief, and the issues stemmed from a "titling issue" on one particular vehicle lease.
Meanwhile, some customers reached out with their concerns. One such customer, Shayla Bryant of Canton, expressed her frustration to FOX 2 Detroit, saying she felt misled after leasing a vehicle that was part of an open recall. LaFontaine, however, is maintaining that it is "impossible to lease a new car under open recall," arguing that the manufacturer's system would not allow for such an error to occur and suggesting the recall must have been issued post lease.
After admission of all the violations found during the investigation, LaFontaine Hyundai of Livonia has accepted the state-imposed conditions. LaFontaine Automotive Group conveyed their approach to the situation, indicating the critical nature of maintaining consumer trust. "The trust and confidence of our valued guests are our top priorities, and we approach this matter with the utmost seriousness," the company stated via CBS Detroit.
