Chelsye Reagan Witcher, a 41-year-old woman from Lakeway, was arrested in Austin on Friday morning in a case involving the tragic death of a six-year-old girl she was in the process of adopting. As reported by CBS Austin, Witcher is facing charges for injury to a child and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, a grave situation revealing a darker narrative behind what was initially reported as a drowning.
The incident, which took place at a residence on Sunrise Ridge Cove on November 1, 2023, was first responded to by Lakeway Police. Witcher had reported finding the child seizing and face-down in the bathtub. Originally believed to be a drowning, the investigation over several months uncovered that Witcher's actions significantly contributed to the death of the child, as additional probing by authorities determined she had attempted to hide "critical evidence" during the initial incident. This turned the bereavement into a criminal investigation, one where the protective veil of innocence once ascribed to Witcher was torn away.
Following the tragic circumstances, the child was airlifted to Dell Children’s Medical Center but succumbed to her injuries the next day. The charges laid against Witcher are severe, with Injury to a Child being a first-degree felony, and Tampering with or Fabricating Physical Evidence classified as a third-degree felony.
