Two Los Angeles Police Department officers walked away with only minor injuries following what could have been a catastrophic helicopter training accident on Tuesday afternoon, reports indicate. The mishap occurred at around 1 p.m. at the Joint Forces Training Base in the 4000 block of Doolittle Avenue, when the LAPD chopper experienced what is being described as a "mechanical failure" during a routine exercise out of the Los Alamitos facility, as reported by KTLA.
The aircraft, part of the LAPD's air support unit, was forced to perform a hard, emergency landing—leaving it resting on its side—an incident which the LAPD referred to as a "minor training" event, however, the wind conditions at the time—amid gusty Santa Ana winds—has raised questions about whether they may have factored into the incident, though no official confirmation has been provided as to the cause, as per NBC Los Angeles.
Fortunately, despite the dangerous nature of the incident, the two officers involved declined medical attention, refusing transportation to a hospital with their injuries determined to be minor, affirming their status directly following the landing, according to FOX LA, which also reported that an investigation into the crash had been initiated that Tuesday afternoon.
