Deobra Redden, who attacked Las Vegas Judge Mary Kay Holthus during his sentencing in January, has been sentenced to 26 to 65 years in prison. Redden leaped over the courtroom bench while being sentenced for battery charges, causing injuries to the judge, as reported by FOX5 Vegas.
In a statement made while Judge Holthus is recovering, she spoke about the effects of Redden's violent outburst. "The impact on both me and family is substantial both mentally and physically. The impact on my professional family has also been significant mentally and physically," she said, according to FOX5 Vegas.
Redden pleaded guilty to six out of seven charges and was spared the death penalty after being found not guilty by reason of insanity for the attempted murder of a 60-year-old victim. He didn’t reach a plea deal with prosecutors and said, "not a bad guy, not an evil person." Judge Holthus told prosecutors, "He made a conscious decision to kill me and made every effort to succeed. If he had his way, he’d be facing a sentence of life without the possibility of parole for murder," as stated by KTNV and FOX5 Vegas.
